Lisa’s Story

Have you ever heard of anyone who has survived 4 different cancers?  Michael’s super-amazing younger sister Lisa has battled and overcome 4 different cancers: Hodgkin’s Disease, malignant melanoma, breast cancer and leiomyosarcoma.

In 1988, when she was just 20 years old, Lisa was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Disease.  She underwent chemotherapy and radiation and was cured.  Twelve years later, Michael removed a cutaneous leiomyosarcoma (smooth muscle cancer) from her forearm.  Nine years later, Lisa noticed a mole on her back that had changed almost overnight.  This time, it was malignant melanoma.

Within a year of her surgery for melanoma, in February of 2010, a routine mammogram revealed breast cancer.  Because of her previous exposure to radiation in being treated for Hodgkin’s Disease, Lisa opted for a double mastectomy.  This serendipitous decision potentially saved her life.  As surgeons removed lymph nodes under each arm, the pathology revealed microscopic melanoma that had spread from her skin.  Lisa underwent removal of the nodes under both arms and completed 52 weeks of chemotherapy (interferon) in September, 2011.

Through all of this, Lisa displayed incredible strength and character.  She fought every battle with grace and the fortitude.  Her positive outlook never waned as she endured one hospital bed after another.  She is a true inspiration, and we are so thankful that she is here with us today.
